Event Description:
Teacher as cultural ambassador: A humanistic approach to teaching cultures in American schools
This presentation discusses the important role of a language teacher as a cultural ambassador and explores a humanistic approach to teaching and learning of Chinese culture in American schools. This approach will emphasize the education of a whole person by integrating: (1) cultural practices, products, and perspectives, (2) Chinese culture and American/world cultures, (3) traditional and modern Chinese culture, and (4) high and pop culture. The presenters will also discuss the importance of developing students’ intercultural competence during a time when prejudice and violence towards Asian (Chinese) Americans are rising.
中文教师作为文化大使:人文主义的文化教学理念与技巧

Topic:
Film can be an extremely useful source for exploring many issues facing China today: environmental concerns, migrant labor, urban demolition/urban construction, China’s changing rural landscape, the generation gap, etc. During this workshop, participants will discuss strategies to teach their students about contemporary China through documentaries.
Prerequisite:
Participants will be asked to watch one of three pre-selected documentaries PRIOR to the workshop. During the workshop teachers will discuss the documentary they watched in small groups and formulate plans on how to use the documentary in their classroom. Documentary film information will be shared during registration.
Note:
CLTA-WA is dedicated to providing a fully engaged workshop in small size. If the morning session reaches full capacity, you will be able to attend the afternoon session from 1-3pm PDT.
